Sadly, it is very common that a dog may lose their way back home and end up in a shelter. The reality is that a staggering number of dogs are lost in the system because they lack a reliable means of identification once they have been found. At Crossroads Animal Hospital, we recommend that every pet is microchipped for their safety.

How does microchipping work and is it safe for my dog?

A microchip is implanted under the skin, much like giving a vaccination. It is a small chip about the size of a grain of rice. The chip, when scanned, provides an identification number. The microchip number is then called into the pet microchip lookup and recovery service. You will be contacted by that service using your contact information that is on file. Implanting a microchip into your dog is quick, safe, and non-invasive. The injection causes a slight pinch during the procedure, but it is only a small amount of discomfort.
